Denzel Hayes Washington, Jr. (born December 28, 1954) is an American actor, screenwriter, director and film producer. He has garnered much critical acclaim for his work in film since the 1990s, including for his portrayals of real-life figures, such as Steve Biko, Malcolm X, Rubin Carter, Melvin B. Tolson, Frank Lucas, and Herman Boone.
Washington has been awarded two Golden Globe awards, a Tony Award and two Academy Awards for his work. He is notable for winning the Best Supporting Actor for Glory in 1990; and the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2002 for his role in the film Training Day. He is considered one of the greatest actors of all time as well as one of the most successful actors of all time.
Malcolm X is a 1992 biographical motion picture about the Muslim-American figure Malcolm X (born Malcolm Little). It was co-written, co-produced, and directed by Spike Lee. The film dramatizes key events in Malcolm X's life: his criminal career, his incarceration, his conversion to Islam, his ministry as a member of the Nation of Islam and later falling out with the organization, his marriage to Betty X, his pilgrimage to Mecca and reevaluation of his views concerning whites, and his assassination on February 21, 1965.
